CANADA, June 9 - Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, on the margins of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s support of the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership, including in its capacity as Canada’s coordinating country at ASEAN, and shared views on areas for collaboration to deepen bilateral relations and create good jobs in both countries.

The prime ministers discussed working together on strengthening democracy and democratic institutions, as well as deepening collaboration on renewable energy, agri-food, infrastructure, and clean and advanced technologies. Prime Minister Trudeau also announced plans for a Team Canada Trade Mission to Malaysia in 2024.

Prime Minister Trudeau provided an update on the implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy to advance regional initiatives related to trade and investment, defence and security, sustainable development, and the fight against climate change. The leaders also discussed ongoing initiatives to strengthen people-to-people ties between Canada and Malaysia, including through the recently expanded Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development program.

The leaders agreed on the importance of working together to strengthen support for the rules-based international order, especially in the wake of Russia’s illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Anwar reaffirmed their commitment to continue enhancing bilateral relations between Canada and Malaysia and agreed to remain in contact.
