Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese recalled after positive tests for Listeria contamination. Detroit, MI(JusticeNewsFlash.com)--Federal FSIS regulators and Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese have issued a recall on all lots of soft Mexican-style cheeses. Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese is based in Reading, Michigan. The Hillsdale County firm announced the recall on June 13, 2009, after discovering various kinds of their Mexican-style cheese products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) www.fsis.usda.gov is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) www.usda.gov. FSIS is responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation’s egg, poultry, and meat products. The following products, regardless of expiration date, are under federal recall: - 12 oz and 10 lb ball of Queso Asadero - 10 lb ball of Queso Oaxaca - 1 lb and 8 oz of Queso Fresco - 1 gallon pail and 3 gallon pail of Queso Requeson - 3 lb packages of Morral Adobera The listed products were sold for retail under the name “Aguas Calientes”. Retailers and delis in Wisconsin, Ohio, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois received shipments of the possibly contaminated products. Currently, there have been no cases of illness related to these products. Although rare, Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a fatal bacterial infection. Listeriosis usually affects newborns, the elderly, and people with poor immune systems. For otherwise healthy people, listeriosis symptoms include fever, stiff neck, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumption of the recalled products should be stopped immediately. The Michigan-based firm encourages consumers to send the possibly contaminated items back to the company. Inquiries may be directed to the manager of the firm at 517-368-5990. Victims of food-borne illness, or food poisoning, may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
