EVANSTON, IL--(Marketwired - November 15, 2016) - New York manufacturing employment inched down for another year, continuing the slow downward slide the state has suffered since the end of the recession, reports the 2017 New York Manufacturers Register^®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI's database of manufacturers, New York lost 8,025 jobs between September 2015 and September 2016, a 1.1% decline, on par with the 1.3% loss MNI reported for the 2014-2015 survey period.

"High business costs and global competition have made it difficult for New York manufacturers to thrive and recoup losses suffered during the recession," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "However, the state's top notch-workforce and abundance of capital funding continue to draw some key high-tech enterprises to the region."

New York lost industrial jobs across the board, reports MNI, with no one sector experiencing significant losses or gains.

New York industries shedding jobs included the state's second largest sector by employment, industrial machinery, which declined by 1% to 76,979 workers. Printing/publishing, New York's top sector by industrial employment, remained unchanged at 107,186 jobs.

Other losses included transportation equipment, down 4%; rubber/plastics, down 3.4%; textiles/apparel, down 2.2%; primary metals, also down 2.2%; chemicals, down 2.1%; electronics, down 1.2%; and fabricated metals, down 1%.

Only two sectors posted notable gains: food processing, which added 735 jobs to its workforce or 1.3%, and furniture/fixtures, up 1%.

The New York Metro Area, including the New York City exurbs, accounts for 378,658 industrial jobs, down 1.3% in the past twelve months. Jobs in New York City proper, however, were largely unchanged at 140,014 workers.
