Honda Again Strong During "Fast Friday" at Indianapolis

  • James Hinchcliffe leads Honda effort in last practice day prior to qualifying
  • Honda drivers post eight of top 10 speeds
  • Honda drivers, teams, led three of four practice days for the "500"

Honda drivers and teams completed preparations for Indianapolis 500 qualifying Friday, claiming eight of the top ten positions on the overall speed chart at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and seven of the top eight "no tow" speeds [laps recorded without the slipstream assistance of another car]. With turbocharger boost pressure turned up to qualifying settings, speeds rose above the 230 mph mark for the first time this week, as all 33 drivers and teams turned theirs fastest laps of the week in today's six-hour session.

James Hinchcliffe led the way for Honda today, as his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team joined Andretti Autosport and Dale Coyne Racing as top-10 Honda teams. Hinchcliffe posted the third fastest speed, 231.972 mph, with teammates Mikhail Aleshin ninth and Oriol Servia, 11th.  All five Andretti Autosport drivers ended the day in the top 10, led by Carlos Munoz at 231.952 mph. Dale Coyne Racing's Gabby Chaves finished the day eighth.

Honda has a rich history of success at the Indianapolis 500. The attached infographic highlights the company's many achievements at the "Brickyard." First-round qualifying on Saturday will determine the contenders for the pole in Sunday's "Fast Nine" shootout, with final qualifying then setting the field for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29.

James Hinchcliffe (#5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda): "I think that we made a lot of progress over the day. If you look at the no tow report, I think we're around 10th or 11th, and that should put us in the thick of the fight for the Top Nine (shootout). It's good to see a lot of Hondas running up front today as well. I'm really impressed with speed, that's one of the fastest laps I've ever done around this joint.

I think pole's going to be 231, 231.5 mph. It's quick, man, no doubt about it. It's higher than I thought it was going to be for sure. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
