New Inpatient Hospice Center to Care for Underserved Communities

14-Bed Unit Is the First Hospital-Based Hospice Unit Located in Washington, DC

/EINPresswire.com/ -- WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - April 18, 2016) - Capital Caring, one of the oldest and largest nonprofit hospice and palliative care organizations in the country, opened its third inpatient hospice location last week. The 14-bed Capital Caring Center, located within Providence Hospital in NE Washington, joins the Capital Caring Halquist Center and the Adler Center for Caring in Arlington and Aldie, VA, respectively, in providing world-class care to those with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

"Capital Caring is devoted to ensuring the moms and dads in our nation's capital who need inpatient hospice care have access to it, and we are thrilled to open the doors of care for them," said Malene Davis, Capital Caring's President and CEO. "We know there is a critical shortage of hospice beds in the city, and other locations may be inaccessible to the most underserved neighbors in the area. It is an honor to bring our world-class hospice service to the community."

"The addition of these 14 new beds at Providence Hospital brings Capital Caring's inpatient capacity across the capital region to 56, including another new unit in Prince George's County that is scheduled to open later this Spring," said Kim Mitchell, who oversees Capital Caring's District-based services as well as the new inpatient unit at Providence Hospital. "While these inpatient units advance Capital Caring's mission to simply improve care, they also help us reduce overall healthcare costs and effectively deliver patient care in times of high anxiety for patients and their families."

Hospice utilization rates in Washington, DC are amongst the lowest in the country, with slightly more than one out of every three individual who qualifies for the specialized care receiving it. In a majority of cases, Medicare's Hospice Benefit or commercial insurance plans make advanced illness care services available at no cost.
