Dr. Hanan Polansky Publishes New Commentary on the Link Between Microcompetition with Latent EBV and Hodgkin Lymphoma

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) points out a new medical commentary entitled “Microcompetition with latent Epstein-Barr virus causes a transcription factor deficiency, under-expression of retinoblastoma (Rb gene), and classic Hodgkin lymphoma.” (1) Many studies report a link between EBV and Hodgkin Lymphoma. However, the exact mechanism through which the cancer develops is largely unknown.
The reduction in transcription of the Rb gene is important because cancerous cells in Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (a type of lymphoma, in which cancer originates from a specific type of white blood cell ) “show two kinds of changes in their retinoblastoma (pRb) tumor suppressor, inactivation through hyper-phosphorylation of the protein, and low concentration caused by underexpression or over-degradation.” (1) The medical commentary focuses on the under-expression option.
