This August in Tokyo, Japan, Coca-Cola fans looked back at
the 100-year history of the contour bottle while glimpsing the future of design
through the Art Slim Bottle display.
Coca-Cola partnered with Isetan Mitsukoshi, one of the
largest department stores in Tokyo, to create a special event that celebrated
both the 100th anniversary of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle and the 2015
introduction of the slim aluminum bottle in Japan.
The main attraction was the Art Slim Bottle Charity exhibit,
which featured the works of over 80 Japanese artists who designed slim bottles
with their own personal style. Visitors could obtain these unique pieces through
charitable donations.
All proceeds from the project will
benefit the “Home of Art for Kids” project, a nonprofit organization which
supports the art education of students in Tohoku, a region affected by the
Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. “Home of Art for Kids” partners with two Japanese
art and design universities to host workshops that encourage the imagination
and creativity of children throughout Tohoku.
Coca-Cola fans could also purchase licensed products bearing
Coca-Cola Mashup art, a collection by over 130 designers from 15 countries inspired
by the classic contour bottle design (read more about Mashup art here). Shirts, mugs, tote bags and other goods with
Mashup designs were up for sale.
In addition to the art exhibition, there were various
Coca-Cola events throughout the Isetan store, including a rooftop restaurant,
show window, and stamp rally. Coca-Cola cocktails were offered at the rooftop
restaurant and the show window displayed slim bottles designed by students. Any
visitor who collected all six Mashup art stamps from the stamp rally earned a
complimentary Coca-Cola slim bottle at the rooftop restaurant.
The exhibit, which attracted 450,000 visitors in its first
week, concluded Aug. 24.
