Toastmasters International is a nonprofit group that helps individuals develop public speaking and communication skills in a hands-on workshop-type environment. Giridhar Mudili has been a member of the organization for years, and during that time has significantly improved his ability to speak in public and assume leadership roles in his career. To receive the award "Competent ToastMaster," one has to complete a set of challenges, which include at least 10 public speaking projects. Being designated as a Competent ToastMaster basically equates to graduating from the educational program in full.

When asked what he had to do to be designated a competent ToastMaster, Giridhar responded "we were required to go through a 10-step process, with each step teaching us a different aspect of giving speeches." However, he said that "the most challenging step was the final 'Inspire Your Audience' challenge," which required him to combine all of the skills he learned in the previous steps while adding charisma in order to attract the attention and interest of his target audience. He also noted that the sixth step "Vocal Variety," was fairly difficult as well because he was required to utilize synonyms and alternate ways of expressing herself that seemed somewhat alien at first.

Of course, the path of becoming a Competent ToastMaster was not walked alone, as Giridhar Mudili was able to consult with fellow program members and utilize the knowledge laid before him in a comprehensive educational guide. As with every other skill set, learning to become proficient public speaker and leader takes practice. Toastmasters International gives their members an extensive amount of hands-on experience in group projects that everyone is encouraged to participate in.

When asked what the most edifying step in his 10-step journey to becoming competent ToastMaster was, Giridhar responded that the fifth step "Your Body Speaks," taught him the importance of body language and how it can be used to imply certain facts or grab the attention of the audience. Ultimately, Mudili said that his experience as a member of Toastmasters International in Dallas has given him an immense amount of newfound confidence and laid the foundation for a successful career and social life. By providing a clear outline, informative educational materials, and an ideal venue in which members can practice their skill sets, Toastmasters International creates a friendly environment that is conducive to development and growth.
