Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that causes a decline in normal cognitive function such as memory, thinking, learning and organizational skills. People living with Alzheimer’s gradually lose their independence in caring for themselves. It’s the most common type of dementia, and not considered a normal part of aging.
Alzheimer’s is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. In Kansas, nearly 335,000 Kansas adults reported subjective cognitive decline which includes self-reported confusion or memory problems. It is one of the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Subjective cognitive decline impacts older adults across Kansas living in both rural and urban communities.
