IBERDROLA SIGNS UP TO UNICEF'S ‘DONATE1DAY’ CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHILD MALNUTRITION
- The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness of the consequences of the chronic malnutrition suffered by millions of children around the globe
- The company will make a contribution and raise money among employees to fund the treatment of 500 children suffering the effects of severe malnutrition
IBERDROLA has signed up to UNICEF's ‘Donate1day’ campaign aimed at preventing the chronic malnutrition suffered by millions of children worldwide. Via this initiative, whose slogan is ‘Donate your best days so that others enjoy better days,’ the organisation aims to raise societal awareness that it is possible to finance one day's treatment of a child suffering from severe malnutrition with small contributions.
The company has therefore started a programme among employees aimed at raising sufficient funds to pay for the medical treatment of at least 500 children suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies. All the money contributed by the company and raised among employees will be donated to UNICEF.
IBERDROLA' involvement in this campaign is in keeping with its unwavering commitment to improving society via initiatives in partnership with major institutions. Moreover, as a socially responsible company, Iberdrola helps to channel the spirit of solidarity of its employees by encouraging them to become involved on a voluntary basis in social projects that reflect the company's values.
Over one third of infant deaths worldwide are a result of maternal-infant malnutrition, especially in the 1000 days from when the mother falls pregnant to the child's second birthday. This a critical period for the prevention of chronic malnutrition, which can be avoided via a treatment that lasts from four to six weeks.
Thanks to this campaign in which IBERDROLA is involved, and which concludes on 31 January, UNICEF will be able to implement an integrated strategy to improve the nutritional status of mothers and their children via preventative actions, the promotion of changes in their socio-cultural environment and the medical treatment of malnutrition.
UNICEF works in the field in over 150 countries and territories to help children to survive and advance in life from first childhood to adolescence. Being the greatest provider of vaccines for poor countries, UNICEF supports children's health and nutrition, quality water and sanitation, basic quality education for every child, and the protection of children against violence, exploitation and AIDS. UNICEF is entirely financed by voluntary contributions made by individuals, enterprises, foundations and governments.
