Government Energy Policy on the Agenda at Oil & Gas UK Event

The significant implications of national and international energy policy for oil and gas will be the subject of a key industry event in Aberdeen.

There is much happening in the political world around energy policy, directly relating to oil and gas. Oil & Gas UK’s Energy Policy Seminar, sponsored by Aker Solutions, will bring together experts in the field to discuss UK and EU energy policies, the targets for new energy sources and the challenges of attracting investment in the current economic climate.

Also up for discussion is the need to upgrade national gas and electricity networks, the changing balance in world markets, the implications of new policies for gas supplies and a review of the intermittency of wind power and other renewables.

Chairing the event will be Oil & Gas UK’s energy policy manager, David Odling, who explained: “The UK Government’s energy policy has three objectives: energy security, affordability and reducing emissions. However, the strategies adopted to reach those objectives are, to a large degree, shaped by policy at the EU level.

“There are major obstacles ahead, including attracting investment on the scale required in electricity, downstream gas and marginal offshore oil and gas developments, the influence of international markets, the need to adapt our national electricity and gas networks, pressures in the supply chain and the ambitious targets for renewable energy.

“It’s essential that the oil and gas industry remains aware of the changing government policies which are – and will continue to – influence business decisions at a national and international level."

Oil & Gas UK’s Energy Policy Seminar will be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on the morning of Thursday 10 November.

Speakers include: Simon Less (Policy Exchange); Alec Carstairs (Ernst & Young); Gary Dolphin (National Grid); John Mitchell (Chatham House); Rob Cross (Statoil); and Simon Bradbury (Poyry).
