"The idea that one has a share in the planet and that one can and should help care for it may seem very large and, to some, quite beyond reality. But today what happens on the other side of the world, even so far away, can effect what happens in your own home," said author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. "Care of the planet begins in one’s own front yard. It extends through the area one travels to get to school or work. It covers such places as where one picnics or goes on vacation. The litter which messes up the terrain and water supply, the dead brush which invites fire, these are things one need not contribute to and which, in otherwise idle moments, one can do something about. Planting a tree may seem little enough but it is something." Hubbard adds, "There are many things one can do to help take care of the planet. They begin with the idea that one should. They progress with suggesting to others they should.”
World Environment Day has been led by the United Nations Environment Programme since 1973 and according to its website, the day "brings together millions of people from across the globe, engaging them in the effort to protect and restore the Earth. People from more than 150 countries participate in this United Nations international day, which celebrates environmental action and the power of governments, businesses and individuals to create a more sustainable world."
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.

She organized a kite flying event at the Washington Monument during the Cherry Blossom Festival which included messages about the environment. She said, “The Washington Monument was packed and it was great to see families out having a good time. We gave out many of The Way to Happiness booklets and they were very appreciative and took photos of the kites and messages. The youth are the future. I want to instill The Way to Happiness messages into them so that we can all have a better future.”
