I write to you today to address a serious charge currently being leveled against the leadership of our country. It was recently revealed that the Obama Administration willingly helped expedite a private business project that could put millions of Americans in harm's way.

During a closed hearing last week to the House Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, General William Shelton, the Air Force's Space Command Chief, testified that the 4G Wireless system that LightSquared, a Virginia-based satellite broadcast company, is planning to activate is proven to jam our country's military and other high-precision Global Positioning Systems (GPS). If these GPS systems are interrupted, the United States aviation, military and rescue operations will be effectively dismantled. Additionally, high-tech farming equipment employing GPS technology and consumer-versions of GPS navigation devices will become nearly useless. Sadly, despite these known consequences, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), with White House support, recently granted LightSquared a waiver allowing them to proceed with the activation of their 4G signal.

Shockingly, General Shelton revealed during the hearing that the White House pressured him to change his testimony regarding the jamming of the GPS signal. Shelton testified that the Obama Administration had asked him to say the effects on the jamming of the GPS signals could be mitigated when they cannot.

Shelton's testimony to the closed hearing was reported by my colleague, Representative Michael Turner (OH-03). I applaud Representative Turner for defending the General and bringing this outrageous situation to the public’s attention. I am so very grateful to both General Shelton and Representative Turner for standing for the truth.

Sadly, I believe President Obama is willing to overlook the risks the LightSquared 4G network could pose to the American people and national security because he would rather grant political favors to two of his supporters involved in this situation. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, whose commission granted the waiver to LightSquared, bundled $500,000 for the Obama campaign. Philip Falcone, head of Harbinger Capital Partners, the top investor in LightSquared, is a major Democratic donor. Clearly, in his support for LightSquared, the President has put political posturing over national security.

Our national leadership should be ashamed. The support of LightSquared is crony capitalism at its worst, but thanks to General Shelton and Representative Turner, the President's disgraceful political games have come to light.
