Bachmann Nominates Local Students to Military Service Academies
On Saturday, May 7, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) presented letters of congratulations to eight Sixth Congressional District cadets for entry into three of our nation’s Military Service Academies. All eight had received nominations for the service academies through the district office. Bachmann said of the recipients:
“Entering into military service is an admirable commitment and I commend these young men for showing such dedication to the preservation of our great nation. They are following in the footsteps of millions of brave Americans who have proudly worn the uniform of the United States military. They join a long line of heroes from the Revolutionary War to those who are fighting today to keep our nation safe. It was an extraordinary privilege for me to meet with these outstanding students from the Sixth Congressional District who will become the future of our armed forces.”
Letters of Nomination are awarded to students who undergo a rigorous application process. Students started the process by submitting academic scores, recommendation letters and an essay on the topic, “Why I want to Attend a Service Academy”. They then underwent an interview with current military officers before receiving their nomination.
There are five Service Academies: The United States Air Force (USAFA), Naval (USNA), Military (USMA), Merchant Marine (USMMA) and Coast Guard (USCGA) Academies. A nomination from a Representative or Senator is required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.
