Students Race Their Innovative Solar, Hydrogen Model Cars

Middle school students from around the state will participate in the Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions on Saturday, May 21 sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The competitions give students the opportunity to show their engineering and design skills by building and racing high-performance model solar and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Sixty-five teams from 22 schools will be competing in the Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car competitions. The student teams will race solar or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles that they designed and built themselves. Trophies will be presented to winners in four categories.The cars will race on a 20-meter course.

NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
