Snyder celebrates math on National Pi Day

March 14 , 2011

LANSING – In honor of National Pi Day, a day noted by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14, Governor Rick Snyder is encouraging Michiganders to celebrate math and education.
“National Pi Day marries some of my favorite things – math and agriculture. Education and math are at the heart of science and innovation and industries that will advance our economy,” said Snyder. “I’m thrilled to be able to partner with a home grown business like Grand Traverse Pie Company to celebrate mathematics education and the bounty of our state’s food and agriculture industries.”

The Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and Education (MDE) partnered with the Michigan-based Grand Traverse Pie Company to commemorate the day. As part of the statewide celebration, Grand Traverse Pie Company locations will be offering customers in their store at 3:14 p.m. a free slice of a Michigan fruit-filled pie for 31.4 minutes.

“We at Grand Traverse Pie Company are honored to help shine a light on the quality of both the agricultural bounty of Michigan and the important role education plays in our state on Pi Day. Only through Michigan’s wonderful fruits and crops can we make our wonderful pies,” said Mike Busley, Co-Founder of Grand Traverse Pie Company. “Our Grand Traverse Pie team would not have been able to craft these pies into a growing business without the quality education which our team members have received in Michigan; both in the public school system and at our state’s universities.”

Pi, Greek letter π is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi = 3.1415926535…With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to show how math can be fun and relevant,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan. “Using this clever play on words, the Governor has found a delicious way to highlight an important math concept that students should know. So, today while you are enjoying a slice of pie, talk to your kids about the important role math plays in our lives everyday.”
