Rice County, MO—A small plane crashed in a soybean field Sunday afternoon, October 10, 2010, leaving a pilot and passenger injured. The aviation accident occurred in close proximity to Lonsdale, Missouri, as reported by the Star Tribune.
According to authorities from the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, a two-seater plane was seen “spiraling” before 2:15 p.m. The aircraft, piloted by 66-year-old Martin Curtis, then reportedly began its unexpected descent, smashing into a powerline and combine before hitting the ground.
The wrecked airplane came to a rest in a soybean field. According to the driver of the combine, Mark Kruse, “We were both lucky today… They walked away, and so did I. If they hadn’t hit the combine they would have gone straight into the trees.”
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and found Curtis and his passenger, 58-year-old Roxanne Rossini, “conscious and alert.” They were transported to New Prague-based Queen of Peace Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Kruse did not suffer any injuries.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials are expected to conduct a full investigation into the Missouri aircraft wreck.
