New nonfiction book reveals life behind bars in Mexico

The Mirror Maze by Lisa Walker and Tom Brungar relives Brungar's will to survive five years of inhumane treatment in Mexican prisons following the path of drug addiction that led him there

SILICON VALLEY, Calif. (MMD Newswire) August 30, 2010 -- The Mirror Maze: A Norwegian Man's True Story of Five Years in Mexican Prisons During the 1980s by Tom Brungar and Lisa Walker follows the labyrinth traveled by the late Brungar, who spent five years in Mexican prisons on a drug charge.

Brungar, a native Norwegian, was arrested in 1981 at the Mexico City airport for smuggling cocaine from Peru to California. The Mirror Maze captures Brungar's experience, as well as his psychological and physical perseverance, transformation of inner awareness, and a love affair with a prison psychologist, who played a major part along with the Norwegian Embassy in Mexico City in obtaining his release.

This story begins with Brungar's history, career, global travels and increasing drug addiction. It is multifaceted, intertwining his personal, philosophical and spiritual life-changing revelations on a background of socio-political issues. The title signifies the "Mirror" he saw himself in and the "Maze" he traveled through to arrive at the exit. The Mirror Maze is written with a strong anti-drug message and to display that torture must stop in the name of humanity.

Upon his release in 1986, Brungar returned to Norway, where he worked for the Norwegian government to assist immigrant refugees. "Our sweet Tom lived a peaceful life until age 65," says Walker. "His wish and promise to God was that his story be told and we are carrying this out."
