Internet Initiative Gets Japanese, U.S. Patents

April 12, 2010 (FinancialWire) — Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (NASDAQ: IIJI) has received approval in both Japan and the U.S.A. for patents on SMFv2, IIJ's proprietary next-generation network management framework.

SMFv2 was developed from the network management framework SMF patented in 2003 (patent 3774433). SMF technology enables the centralized management — including initialization and re-configuration — of IIJ's proprietary SEIL routers. SMFv2 takes this technology a step further by enabling the same level of centralized management for network devices produced by other companies.

Qualities of the new system include compatibility, ability to centrally manage other network devices in addition to the SEIL series of routers; extensible functions and applications; an auto-generation function that transfers new functions to the equipment being managed.

Users can also add or delete whatever functions or applications are needed. This feature allows network devices to get the most out of limited hardware resources and enables these same network devices to perform as a cloud service cache, load balancer, protocol accelerator, and other accelerator-type devices.

SMFv2 is already providing the system infrastructure for IIJ's SOHO Ethernet service LaIT Private Ether and NEC Networks & System Integration Corp.'s WAN solution SASDAKE.

IIJ also acquired a patent on its SMF-LAN, which enables the centralized management of network equipment using SMF over wide-area Ethernet and other closed networks. IIJ will continue to develop new technologies that use SMF to promote the use of SMF to a wider range of users.

Founded in 1992, Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (NASDAQ: IIJI) (Tokyo Stock Exchange TSE1: 3774) is one of Japan's leading Internet-access and comprehensive network solutions providers.
