Township Cited After Burning Debris Containing Asbestos

A township in Michigan has been cited by a state environmental agency after burning debris that contained asbestos. Mesothelioma Cancer News (Kalamazoo, Michigan) – A township in Kalamazoo, Michigan has been cited by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) over the demolition of property and burning of its debris without it being properly checked for asbestos beforehand. As reported by the Kalamazoo Gazette, officials of the township sent a letter mid-June claiming that they were unaware that they were not allowed to proceed with the burning of the debris after the demolition. Pavilion Township Supervisor Patrick White is quoted in the report as writing in the letter that the “township board did not know that once the buildings were demolished that we couldn't burn the debris. ... Balkema was also not aware that the debris could not be burned… The township has since advised Balkema Excavating Inc. that no more burning is to take place.” White is further quoted as requesting, “Mr. Christmas, since this has occurred in our township solely from our ignorance on the subject, it would be great if you would be willing to address the Supervisors Association of Kalamazoo County. ... I'm sure other townships could benefit from our situation, and with your assistance we could avoid those problems from occurring in the future.” The incident is reportedly still under investigation by the DEQ.
