Madonna concert set crane collapse kills 2 workers
New York, NY-Construction on Madonna's set for an upcoming tour date in Marseilles, France left two workers dead and several others seriously injured. The tragic construction accident occurred at the Stade Velodrome on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 5:15 p.m. France time, according to CNN.
The workplace accident occurred when the crane, constructing the concert set, collapsed while lifting large metal trusses. The trusses were being used to build a structure to hold the concert lighting and rigging. Accident reports indicate 27 fire engines and 80 firefighters responded to the scene of the accident. Ten workers were rushed by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to nearby hospitals for treatment of their serious injuries sustained in the collapse. Two victims received surgery and another is listed in critical condition. The other seven victims were treated for their injuries by medical professionals and released. Two of the injured workers, a 53-year-old French man died on Thursday, and a 32-year-old British citizen died on Friday from injuries sustained in the crane collapse.
The accident happened at the 60,000 seating Stade Velodrome where Madonna was scheduled to perform the first five concerts of her "Sticky and Sweet" tour. At this time, at least one of Madonna's scheduled concerts has been reportedly cancelled. Madonna has released a statement in regards to the tragic accident saying, "My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."
