PRIVACY DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE: Novel Describes a Disturbing and Realistic View of the Future

(MMD Newswire) May 7, 2009 -- The Expert on Everything - a novel, is a story which concerns a young man unexpectedly receiving a technology to eradicate the concept of privacy in our "post-9/11" world and examines just how much privacy we will trade for national security, against a background of competing corporate and political interests.

Described as a cross between "Catch-22" and "Three Days of the Condor," this techno-political-thriller-with-an-attitude focuses on realistic technological details while taking the reader on a journey of Charlie Sanders, who brings a wry point of view about finding himself caught in a surveillance experiment whose motives and purposes are unknown. He inadvertently acquires a so-called "open source intelligence" system which has the ability to obtain unlimited information from any database, anywhere in the world, and to "speak" to Charlie through an earpiece. Meanwhile, the technology itself has its own ideas and starts making demands of Charlie while a "slightly off" cast of characters make their moves to acquire the power to eliminate privacy once and for all.

The War on Terror (AKA "Man-Made Disasters") has raised questions about protecting civil liberties and privacy during a new kind of war that knows no national borders. Edward David Gil's novel posits the following: Privacy doesn't exist anymore......people just don't realize it yet.

The main character in Gil's book, Charlie Sanders, finds himself caught in a surveillance experiment whose motives and purposes are unknown. He gets involved with a so-called "open source intelligence" system which has the ability to obtain unlimited information from any database, anywhere in the world, and to "speak" to Charlie through an earpiece.

Are we entering another Dark Age in history - of fading empires, religious fanaticism, economic stagnation and a retreat by civilized cultures into a few fortified enclaves? Such a technology as described in the novel might enable us to remove "bad guys" much more quickly. However, if we actually possessed this kind of technology, would we know where to stop? Would we unconsciously begin to institute a form of fascism in our own country? An ensemble cast, representing the whole spectrum of opinions, deals with these issues as Charlie is pursued by competing interests, and the technology itself starts making demands.

"I think debate is a healthy thing but it just may be irrelevant in this case; privacy may actually no longer exist and people just do not understand that yet. My story posits that we are trending this way and therefore I think the real debate is actually one of ethics, and simply being more tolerant of each other since all our ‘laundry' will be out there. The technology has seen to that." says Edward David Gil.
