Mothers Stop Plastic Danger to Your Children. Part II

Since our last article on life threatening seriousness of Latex and Plastic to Children, many new articles and companies are getting on the "Let us Clean it Up", Bandwagon. There have also been some unfavorable responses from Manufactures. We went back to our authority on this subject, Dr Fred Weiner of Chicago. Although a dentist, he motivated by his young child, is worried about his safety and the safety of all children and now adults as well. He was nice enough to spend some time with us.
We started out by asking Dr. Weiner what has been going on with his research since last time we spoke. "It has been exhausting just trying to keep up with more and more issues of these compounds in latex and plastics effecting children. It has become more apparent how we must come together as and make this a National Health Alert. That may seem extreme to you, however when children's Endocrine systems cannot develop, in a significant percentage of children, that is serious. It is only one new part of the problem." We then asked Dr Weiner in his Chicago office if people in the industry have come forward. He began to have a smile on his face." I guess I should not smile about this, but the response has been, to quote the phrase, a "double edge sword". The really good news is since you interview me last time it has stimulated articles in the September issues of Natural Health and Parents magazine. The articles are great and if you want a copy just have your readers contact me. There is also good news from Michigan. There is research going on to eliminate all the harmful chemicals we are speaking about in the latex plastics. The closure and a reduction of the allergic response, and other more complex issues will take more time".
It seemed appropriate to ask Dr. Weiner what might help us temporally. "Of course research and awareness are increasing every day. I think the avoidance for the exposure of some of these harmful chemicals is a temporary idea. For example, drink out of a glass or porcelain bottle. Use Stainless steel or non BPA or phalate-free plastic. Do not microwave any plastic item. The chemicals come out even faster when you do that. Then you eat from that bowl or the container that has now had the chemicals come out into the food. Avoid toys mad from PVC, although indestructible, they can cause serious endocrine problems, If you every have seen those plastic containers and they look hazy; for sure get rid of those have chemicals coming out of them. Do not was plastics in the dishwasher again the chemical come out faster and can contaminate other items. Wash those separately in soap and water."
Dr. Weiner you are using the word BPA or phalate? How does this relate to Latex as your first interview spoke of? "That is an excellent question. I have not stopped working on the latex issues; however, they are another form of plastics. When I started to look at baby bottles for latex, the plastic bottle was made of a PVC type of chemical. I then looked a little farther and found that women and children are more susceptible to these endocrine problems because of the PVC and phalates. This is because in Women they acted like a birth control pill. It is more than concerning that when children and fetuses are exposed at certain times and dosed the damaging results is permanent. I had a feeling when I was going to look at baby bottles and nipples for latex that toothbrushes, milk bottles and other items including Cosmetics would come up as a problem"
Dr. Weiner it seems that everything is a problem? "No just several chemicals that can be replaced to insure less danger. For example, the EPA has only banned one chemical in about 20 years and only a few in all of its history. What is also frightining most chemicals are never approved and being used commonly. To me that this is unbelievable." Dr Weiner, what will you being doing next? "It seems like there are people out there doing good research, like Alan Reder whose writing gave me a lot of information on my plastic work. My point being there seems to be a little fragmentation or total lack of awareness by the general population. What I am going to spearhead is an alliance of people doing the same type of work and trying to get the government to get the products marked for Danger both on the items and television commercials like they do for pharmaceuticals. I know how much money in dollars and lives it took to fight those battles. I hope this coalition can be strong enough to get this to happen before to much damage is done. Again, the first there has to be a central agency of people from all the United States attacking the problems from a different angle. You may say what about Green Peace.? They are a great organization and I hope they participate. However, it would also be nice to have visible people like Bono, Vice President Gore and other notables, to help spearhead one organization. They are all fighting for many of the world problems with their time and money. I recommend that a central agency be set up and act like a governing body not governmental. This new Organization would be strong enough and pooling its resources in the same direction at the same time. Yes there are so many problems; however look at the problems these chemicals and how the products effect the entire population. I have not mentioned the problems to the environment or the future generations".
