International experts endorse high environmental standards at Gazprom Neft’s Omsk Refinery

Key performance indicators (KPIs) at Gazprom Neft’s Omsk Refinery have been assessed by specialists from Solomon Associated — a world leader in fuel and energy industry benchmarking — with international analysts confirming the strong performance of energy-saving technologies deployed throughout the plant. The modernisation of production facilities at the Omsk Refinery in 2022 has resulted in energy efficiency improving by 27%. Resources savings of this kind form part of initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts from production. Optimising energy consumption at the Omsk Refinery is being undertaken as part of the plant’s environmentally friendly upgrading, involving investments of more than ₽400 billion.

Cutting-edge technological solutions are allowing the Omsk Refinery to consistently improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption of key energy resources such as heat, fuel and electricity. Electricity savings at the Omsk Refinery in 2021 reached more than 1,000 KWh — the average annual consumption of 500 apartments. Using renewable energy sources is further reducing the plant’s environmental impacts. The region’s first solar-powered (1 MW-capacity) electricity station has been in operation at the Omsk Refinery since 2019, with energy produced by this station being used to cover all electricity used by the plants administration buildings. Development of green technologies remains ongoing — the plant is now implementing a project to expand this solar-power plant to 20 MW.

A further area of the plant’s work in environmental protection involves careful management of water consumption. The Omsk Refinery is continuing its construction of a new “Biosphere” water treatment facility, which will allow the plant to cut its river-water consumption by six cubic metres per year — “closed-loop” operation meaning more than 70% of treated water can be reused in production processes. The Biosphere is a leading environmental protection project in the region and one of nine such projects at the Omsk Refinery forming part of the federal “Clean Air” programme. This new complex can treat water to up to 100% purity, while leak-proof sealing of all processes avoids any environmental impacts.

“Improving environmental performance in production is a priority for the Omsk Refinery in implementing modernisation projects — for which reason we are not just continuously improving the efficiency of our production processes, but also deploying technologies to ensure the optimum use of natural resources. This environmentally friendly approach to developments in industrial production is a global trend. And the only way to protect and preserve this region’s ecosystem”

Notes for editors

Gazprom Neft is currently engaged in a full-scale modernisation programme at its Omsk refinery, involving cumulative investment of more than ₽400 billion by 2025. The first stage of this modernisation has involved the construction and reconstruction of key technological facilities, allowing the complete transition to the production of Euro-5 fuels, significantly improving energy efficiency and environmental friendliness in production. The implementation of the second phase of this modernisation programme is now ongoing, as a result of which the refining depth (“conversion factor”) and light product yield are expected to match the highest international standards.
