CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, US, May 13, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On May 1st, 2019, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Florida Chapter held a drug education presentation for youth in its information center in downtown Clearwater. Attendees included 10 to 15 year-olds and their parents. The seminar included general information about the dangers of drugs, with more specific attention on the physical and mental effects of marijuana, or “weed”, as it is commonly called.

“Marijuana is one of the most abused drugs in the world. Some people think that since it is legal in some places, it must be safe.” Said Julieta Santagostino the President of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Florida Chapter. “But your body doesn’t know a legal drug from an illegal drug. It only knows the effect the drug creates once you have taken it.”

During the presentation each attendee received a copy of the Truth About Marijuana information booklet which includes such facts as Marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke; a single cannabis joint could cause as much damage to the lungs as up to five regular cigarettes smoked one after another. Based on the well-researched facts presented in the Truth About Marijuana booklet, the group discussed the immediate effects of taking marijuana that include rapid heartbeat, disorientation, lack of physical coordination, and the mental effects such as depression, sleepiness panic attacks and anxiety.

Emergency room records from the University of Colorado Hospital show a three-fold increase in marijuana cases since the state first allowed recreational marijuana in January 2014. ER visits for marijuana-caused symptoms include repeated vomiting, racing heart and psychotic episodes.
