But taking them [prescription drugs] for non-medical use or ‘self-medicating’ can be just as dangerous and addictive as illegal street drugs.”

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, US, May 9, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On May 6, 2019, the Florida chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World (FDFW) hosted a seminar in its downtown Clearwater headquarters after which a Q and A was held on "The Relation Between Prescription Drug Overdoses, Suicides and Homicides". The seminar was led by the President of FDFW Florida, Julieta Santagostino, who referred to a 31-page information expertly-researched but easy-to-read booklet called The Truth About Prescription Drug Abuse. The booklet detailed the short and long-term effects of tranquilizers or sedatives such as Xanax, hypnotics or sleeping pills, and stimulants such as Ritalin. Julieta also showed an excerpt of a 90-minute documentary in which real people tell of their addiction to drugs, both street and prescription drugs. FDFW provides copies of the booklet and DVD at no cost to parents, educators, community leaders, pastors, law enforcement and anyone else who would like to get the information for themselves or to educate others.

“Many think prescription drugs are safe because they were prescribed by a doctor,” said Julieta Santagostino the President of FDFW Florida Chapter. “But taking them for non-medical use or ‘self-medicating’ can be just as dangerous and addictive as illegal street drugs.”

The National Institute of Drug Abuse reported that, “According to results from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than one million misused prescription stimulants, 1.5 million misused tranquilizers, and 271,000 misused sedatives for the first time; more people have died from prescription drug overdoses than any other drugs.”

In addition to the “Truth About Prescription Drug Abuse” information booklet, FDFW also offers two booklets on more specific prescription drugs, the Truth About Painkillers and the Truth About Ritalin Abuse.

Anyone who would like more information or to get copies of the different information booklets can visit the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Information Center at 41 N. Fort Harrison Ave, in downtown Clearwater which is open 10 AM to 10 PM every day; call 727-467-6962 or email info.fl@drugfreeworld.org
