Texas-based emergency locum physician Dr. David Anthony Miranda explores the rise of telehealth within clinical health care.

WEST LAKE HILLS, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, January 16, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The implementation of telecommunications technologies within medicine and facilitated by near-instant access to electronic information, telehealth is, first and foremost, intended to support long-distance clinical health care. While telehealth has been a prominent part of routine medical care for over a decade, more recently the practice has begun to grow in prevalence within urgent care and in predominantly rural, medically underserved communities, according to David Anthony Miranda M.D., a highly respected emergency locum physician from San Antonio, Texas.

Telecommunications technologies utilized within telehealth, in addition to established terrestrial and wireless communication methods, may include video conferencing, streaming media, and so-called 'store-and-forward' imaging, Dr. Miranda reveals. The practice, he says, may also be used for health-related education and public health administration, in addition to clinical health care.

"Telehealth is distinct from what's commonly known as telemedicine in so far as it refers to a broader spectrum or scope of services than its more established predecessor," explains the south-central Texas-based physician.

According to David Anthony Miranda M.D., while telemedicine pertains quite specifically to clinical services offered remotely, telehealth may also be utilized in the facilitation of non-clinical services. "Provider training," he suggests, "would be one such application, as would arranging long-distance administrative meetings between medical professionals, for example."

While according to the World Health Organization there is no universally accepted or definitive single definition for telehealth, the United Nations' specialized international public health agency has adopted a broad description of the practice. "This," says David Anthony Miranda M.D., "states that telehealth involves the delivery of health care services, where distance is a critical factor, by all health care professionals using information and communication technologies for the exchange of valid information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and injuries, for research and evaluation, and for the continuing education of health care providers, all in the interest of advancing the health of individuals and their communities."

Of particular interest to Dr. David Anthony Miranda is the growing importance of telehealth provision within remote communities, having himself been driven largely by a desire to care for medically underserved, predominantly rural populations during his 30-year career as a physician. "Telehealth allows rural health care providers to quickly and easily connect with their patients, often from a distant site," explains Dr. David Anthony Miranda.

"This allows patients," he continues, "to effectively receive often much-needed care in their communities without having to endure potentially long periods of travel."

According to David Anthony Miranda M.D., given the shortage of many medical specialties in more rural U.S. states, such as Texas, telehealth plays a vital part in ensuring patients in more remote communities are afforded access to the care which they need. "The ability to leverage telecommunications technologies in order to connect patients with specialists at remote sites rather than forcing them to travel often great distances to obtain the care they require is one of the single biggest factors in the continued growth and success of telehealth in my opinion," he adds, wrapping up.
