Atlanta Dentists Add New Laser to Treat Gum Disease

/EINPresswire.com/ -- MARIETTA, GA--(Marketwired - January 29, 2016) - Atlanta West Dentistry has a new laser treatment for patients struggling with gum disease and want to forego traditional periodontal surgery.

The Marietta dental office recently added a laser unit called DEKA Smart CO2 Laser. The special laser is used to remove gum disease infections and then allows for reattachment of the teeth and gums.

"This is a significant change to the traditional approach because we don't have to use scalpels or sutures to remove the infection and repair the gums," said Dr. Travis Watson, who operates Atlanta West Dentistry with his wife, Dr. Cameron Watson. "The laser treatment is not only less invasive, but it increases the overall success rate of the procedure."

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and has been linked to serious problems like diabetes and heart disease. About 75 percent of Americans will have gum disease at some point in their lives. In its advanced stages, an infection develops between the tooth and gum. Without treatment, the infection can reach the bone and lead to tooth loss.

Laser treatment provides a more predictable way to treat patients with chronic gum disease. Certain patients struggle with maintenance of good gum health because of health problems or a family history of gum disease. Dr. Cameron Watson said patients who have struggled with gum disease for years are excited to find a way to prevent painful gum surgery or possible tooth loss.

"We have used laser dentistry for years for various purposes, but this is a technology we are very excited about," Dr. Travis Watson said. "In addition to the gum disease treatment benefits and the post-surgery benefits, we get to conduct surgery in a dry field without any bleeding, which makes our surgeries very efficient and precise. It's just a win-win for everybody."

Atlanta West Dentistry, 1808 Powder Springs Rd. SW, is a state-of-the-art office built in 2013. The practice provides all phases of dentistry, including preventive dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, sedation dentistry and dental implants. Dr. Travis Watson and Dr. Cameron Watson use the latest techniques and technology to provide thorough and compassionate dental care to all their patients.

The Atlanta dental practice offers the cosmetic solution Invisalign, which uses clear aligners to gradually move teeth into a more appropriate position; dental implants to replace single missing teeth and entire arches of missing teeth; and comfortable digital impressions. The staff also uses a handheld device known as The Wand, which delivers local anesthesia without pain.

A Georgia native, Dr. Travis Watson earned his undergraduate degree in microbiology at the University of Georgia. He then received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. Following dental school, Dr. Travis Watson was accepted into the General Practice Residency at University of Alabama-Birmingham, one of the country's top residency programs. The program expanded Dr. Travis Watson's dental skills to include oral surgery, dental implant placement and IV sedation.

Dr. Travis Watson has completed more than 2,000 hours of continuing education over the past 10 years. He has trained at The Dawson Academy and The Pankey Institute, two of the most prestigious dental training institutes in the country. Dr. Travis Watson is one of the youngest dentists to have earned a Fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry. In 2014, he was rated in Atlanta Magazine as one of the city's 5-star dentists, and during his residency, he was presented with the Most Outstanding Resident award. Dr. Travis Watson also holds a Fellowship with the International College of Dentists and is president of the Georgia Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Cameron Watson earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in 2002. She trained in sedation dentistry with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. Dr. Cameron Watson renders safe nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to patients suffering from dental anxiety or for patients who need multiple treatments completed in one visit.

Dr. Cameron Watson is trained to place Invisalign for patients with crooked teeth, gapped teeth or mild bite issues. She completed her training in orthodontics with the Aligntech Institute -- the makers of Invisalign -- and American Orthodontic Society. She also received training in endodontics from the Essential Dental Training Center in New York City.

Dr. Cameron Watson was listed by Cobb Life Magazine as a rising star younger than 40. She holds memberships with the Georgia Dental Association, American Dental Association, Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, Northeast District Dental Society and American Orthodontic Society.
