A chemist and acting director of physical and computational sciences at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been elected to the rank of Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Louis Terminello was elected in the chemistry section for "innovations in synchrotron radiation spectroscopy research in revealing electronic and atomic structure of new materials; and strategic leadership in the field of chemical imaging." Synchrotron radiation occurs when charged radioactive particles are accelerated in a curved path or orbit.

Terminello was recently appointed to head up physical and computational sciences at PNNL. Since joining the Laboratory in 2009, he has also served as the chief science and technology officer for national security, and as the chief scientist for fundamental and computational sciences. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2004. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. The organization's council annually elects members whose "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished." Election as an AAAS Fellow is determined by peer reviewers. Fellows are honored for "meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications." AAAS began honoring its distinguished members with the title of Fellow in 1874.

PNNL now has 37 active staff members who hold the rank of AAAS Fellow. Terminello will be recognized along with the rest of the 2015 class of Fellows at the AAAS annual meeting in Washington, DC in February.
