JDRF Shows the World What Type 1 Diabetes Looks Like
/EINPresswire.com/ -- WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - November 13, 2015) - To help continue with Diabetes Awareness Month, Derek Rapp, CEO & President of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), discusses how type 1 diabetes has affected his personal life and what JDRF is doing this month and year-round to combat the disease.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) first touched my immediate family in 2004 when my then 10-year-old son Turner was diagnosed with the disease. Actually, Turner was the fifth member of my wife's family to be diagnosed with T1D, and a sixth would follow soon after Turner. Determined to make a difference for him and the many other families faced with T1D, my wife and I became actively involved with JDRF and served as volunteers in a number of capacities. Eventually, I became a member of the International Board of Directors, Chair of Research and Vice-Chairman of the Board.
It is an honor to now be JDRF's CEO & President and leading this unique organization with a powerful mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. JDRF was created -- and is still governed -- by people with a direct connection to T1D. Whether it is colleagues with T1D or parents of children with T1D, we share the utmost urgency to help cure this disease.
