CHICAGO (July 30, 2015)—

The American Lung Association recognized the outstanding volunteer work of Albert A. Rizzo, M.D., with the Will Ross Medal during the Lung Association's annual National Volunteer and Staff Awards Ceremony in Chicago, Illinois.

The award is the highest honor bestowed on a volunteer from the American Lung Association who has made a significant contribution to the prevention and control of lung disease. The award is given in memory of Will Ross, a Wisconsin industrialist, a former tuberculosis patient, and one of the American Lung Association's most dedicated volunteers who served as the first non-medical President of the Association from 1945-1946.

Albert A. Rizzo, of Hockessin, Delaware, has served the American Lung Association for over 30 years, and has held many leadership positions in regional and national roles, most recently serving as Chair of the National Board (2011-2012) and currently as the organization's Senior Medical Advisor.

"Compassion, professional expertise and dedication are three qualities that we seek in our leadership. The American Lung Association is fortunate to have found such qualities in abundance with Dr. Rizzo," said American Lung Association National President and CEO Harold P. Wimmer. "Dr. Rizzo has selflessly and skillfully served our organization both locally and nationally, extending his reach to legislators, professionals, patients and the public alike."

Rizzo served as an important leader for the non-profit organization when he oversaw the Organizational Effectiveness Assessment (OEA), a comprehensive initiative designed to transform the American Lung Association in terms of efficiencies and effectiveness. In addition to his role as Senior Medical Advisor to the Lung Association, Rizzo also frequently serves as an expert resource to the news media on topics relating to lung health.

"Dr. Rizzo not only keeps the Lung Association informed on best practices and cutting edge research within the pulmonary care industry, but he also serves as a dedicated volunteer and leader," Wimmer said. "We are a stronger organization as a result of his participation, and we are proud to honor Dr. Rizzo with the Lung Association's highest honor, the Will Ross Medal."
