For Team Honda HRC's Cole Seely, the Glen Helen National was an improvement on last week's AMA Pro Motocross season opener, although untimely falls held him to 10th overall. Seely again showed notable speed during qualifying, but the first moto saw him take a pair of tumbles that shuffled him back to 38th. Seely kept his composure and was able to fight back through the field, crossing the finish line in 14th. The second moto went much better, and Seely rode well throughout the entire 30-minute-plus-two-lap race to log a ninth.

Meanwhile, it was another exciting day for Seely's fellow Red Rider Eli Tomac, who put together an inspiring performance aboard his factory GEICO Honda CRF450R, en route to a perfect 1-1 effort. Tomac's unblemished record to start the season moved him to 19 points ahead of second place.

NOTES

• Though he's still recuperating from injury, Team Honda HRC's Trey Canard flew to California to support his fellow Honda riders, and the Oklahoman was kept busy while he was in town. Canard attended a Friday-night dealer appearance at Chaparral Motorsports as well as two race-day autograph sessions at the track, and also joined host and friend Jimmy Albertson on the live Pro Motocross pre-race show.
• After being sidelined at last week's Hangtown season opener following a first-moto crash, Cole Seely had a mellow week, much of which was spent recovering for Glen Helen. "I was still a little banged up after last week's crash so I wasn't able to ride earlier in the week," he said. "I went and got rechecked by the doctor as a precaution and everything came back good, so I did go out Wednesday and Thursday to get some laps in. I didn't have a really hard week because I was trying to save myself for the weekend."
• During the morning's timed qualifying practice sessions, a mere .641 seconds separated the top four riders, and Seely's 2:20.610 lap was third-quickest. GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac qualified sixth at 2:21.290.
• For the second consecutive week, Tomac was the fastest rider on the track during both motos, and he opened a healthy margin over second place by the time the checkered flag flew. In the opening race, he won by 37.610 seconds, while in the second he pulled to a 23.426-second gap.
• Glen Helen is known for a few unique obstacles, including the Talladega first turn—the steepest-banked, fastest turn in the series—and drastic and challenging elevation changes like Mount St. Helens, which towers hundreds of feet over the track's bottom section. "The start at Glen Helen is intense," Seely said. "Everyone's going so fast because of how long the straightaway is, and then everyone's barreling into Talladega, which is basically a bowl turn. Then directly following the start there are multiple steep elevation changes that can cost a lot of time if you make a mistake. Unfortunately, I had an incident like that today. I fell on one of the hills and couldn't get going from where I was, so I had to wait for all the riders to pass so I could ride back down the hill and try it again."
• Tomac's dominant performance was Honda's first 1-1 premier-class sweep at Glen Helen since Ricky Carmichael topped both motos in 2004, and the sixth overall. Carmichael had turned in the same moto scores at the '02 and '03 editions, Sebastien Tortelli went 1-1 for Honda at Glen Helen in '99 and Jeremy McGrath was perfect in '96.
• The Honda Red Riders will return to action on May 30 for round 3 of the AMA Pro Motocross series in Lakewood, Colorado, for the Thunder Valley National. On Friday, Team Honda HRC and the GEICO Honda squad will visit Sun Enterprises for an autograph session.

THE FOCUS: Honda's Home Race

Of the 12 stops on the summer's AMA Pro Motocross schedule, Glen Helen Raceway is the most familiar track to Southern California native Cole Seely. Of course Seely is hardly alone; with many teams based nearby—American Honda's Torrance race shop is an hour and 15 minutes away—the facility is a hotspot for testing and practice sessions throughout the season.

"Glen Helen is definitely a home track for the majority of riders out here, but I don't think it really affects how people do during the race," Seely said. "I'm pretty sure everyone on the circuit has spun a ton of laps here, especially if they live in California, but the track is so much different for the national that it's not much of an advantage. On practice days we don't run all the hills or obstacles, and they prep it completely different for the national."

Nonetheless, most members of Team Honda HRC were pleased to attend the closest race to home since the January 31 Anaheim 3 Supercross. "This is the only outdoor race of the season that we don't have to jump on a plane and fly somewhere, usually while also adjusting to a time change," said Team Manager Dan Betley. "Also, when you sleep in a hotel every weekend, it's really nice to be able to stay home and sleep in your own bed prior to race day."

Cole Seely "Qualifying was actually pretty good today. I was sitting first for a while until [Ken] Roczen and [Blake] Baggett got a better time than me on the last lap. It was still close and I was only half a second off of pole position. I'm not normally the strongest during qualifying so it was nice to start the day off on a positive note. I started about fifth in the first moto but had some crashes and crossed the line in almost dead-last on the first lap. The second moto was a little better; I got a mediocre start and was sitting just outside the top ten. I worked up to seventh but a couple guys caught me toward the end and I finished ninth. It was good to just get out there and get a whole moto in."

Yasuhiro Yokoyama: Technical Director – Team Honda HRC Motocross  "GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac had another excellent race and has won 4 motos in a row now. He is riding well and the bike is working great for him. We will see if there's anything we can improve more and try to keep his momentum going for the rest of the season. This race was practically a first 450 outdoor race for Team HRC's Seely and he had some ups and downs but finished within the top 10. I am sure he will improve as the series progresses."

Dan Betley: Team Manager "What can I say about Eli; total domination for the second week and he's now four for four. I couldn't be more proud of him but I'm really happy with the team as well. This is a full team effort, so it's a win for everyone. Eli is just in the zone, and we're going to try and keep this momentum going week to week. Unfortunately, it was another tough first moto for Cole; he ended up going down, which sent him to the very back of the pack. Right now we're just looking for him to get some laps under his belt, get experience riding with these guys in an outdoor setting and learn the bike and what adjustments need to be made. Then we'll go from there. I believe we did that in the second moto and made some progress. This week we'll do some testing and head to Colorado strong."

Rich Simmons: Mechanic (Cole Seely) "Today was definitely better for Cole than last week, which is good. He was able to put some laps in and learn each time he was out on the track. The first moto was a little rough with two crashes, but he was still able to get a pretty decent finish and the second moto was much better. He's still learning, so the goal is to improve each weekend. He's pretty happy with the bike so at this point we're just making little changes on race day. Today we only made a small change to the shock after the first practice and worked on tire selection."
