Track:
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca – 2.238-mile, 11-turn natural road course
Length:
Tudor Championship – 2:40 hour endurance race Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series – 2.30 hour time limit
Tire Sets:
- Tudor Championship - P teams will be allowed 8 sets of tires for the race (including dry and wet tires); PC teams, 6 sets; and GTD teams will receive 7 sets.
- There is no set limit for the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.
WHICH TIRE ARE THEY USING:
**Continental Tire has designated, Blacks, as the dry tire to be raced at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2015. If teams move to wet tires, the P and PC classes will stay on, Blacks, while the GTD class will move to, Golds.
P Blacks – the same tire compound used at Long Beach, Sebring, Detroit, Mosport, Lime Rock, Road America, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta. Delta Wing Blacks – because it’s the only car on this configuration, it will race on, Blacks, year round. PC Blacks – the same tire compound used at Long Beach, Sebring, Detroit, Mosport, Lime Rock, Road America, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta. GTD Blacks – the same tire compound used at Long Beach, Sebring, Detroit, Mosport, Lime Rock, Road America, VIR, COTA, and Road Atlanta. CTSCC This tire compound will be used at all other tracks this year.
Pit Window:
A fuel stint for the P class is approximately 40 minutes.
Track Characteristics:
The actual track configuration of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is fairly “easy” on the tires. However, the sand, dirt and wind combine to make for a slippery surface that can create grip issues as a run wears on. Typically cars will have maximum grip on new tires but on older tires, cars will start to slide around a bit. The track is also sensitive to temperature change so it’s important to keep heat in the tires as well as keeping them cleaned off for re-starts.
FYI
- How many? – Continental Tire will bring roughly 3,000 tires to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to accommodate the two series.
- Special Guest – Continental Tire will host San Jose Earthquakes standout, Jordan Stewart, during Sunday’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race. Stewart will join his team Friday in Utah as the Earthquakes take on The Real Salt Lake. Upon his return the car enthusiast will spend his off day at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca taking in the sites. Stewart is a participant in this year’s “What’cha Got” Series set to air on Fox Sports beginning in August, where 14 Major League Soccer (MLS) players take their turn behind the wheel of a Lamborghini. The show is hosted by Townsend Bell.
- New Addition – Continental Tire launched the newest ultra-high performance (UHP), all-season tire in their ExtremeContactTM line of tires at their proving grounds in Uvalde, TX back in March with the help of drivers, Ozz Negri and Marc Miller. Now, the NEW ExtremeContactTM DWS06 is hitting shelves. The next generation of the ExtremeContactTM DWS is the tire of choice for drivers seeking true, year-round traction. A tire built for sports cars, luxury sport cars and luxury sport crossovers, it’s a tire that’s made, For What You Do. The ExtremeContactTM DWS06 marks the debut of SportPlusTM Technology which is designed for precise handling; security on wet, slippery roads; and excellent tread life. Another marquee feature is Continental’s Quick View Indicators, including the Alignment Verification System and Tuned Performance Indicators. Drivers will receive an extra measure of confidence with the inclusion of Tuned Performance Indicators. The Dry, Wet and Snow letters in the tread indicate the tire’s optimal performance levels in a variety of driving conditions.
- Zero Landfill Status - The topic of sustainability is a high priority for Continental Tire. Whether developing new technologies like dandelion tires or EcoPlus technology, Continental Tire is a leader in sustainability and their newest tire production facility in Sumter, S.C. is an excellent example of that. The Sumter facility recently attained status as a “zero landfill” plant in its first year of production. The term “zero landfill” means that 100 percent of the plant’s waste is converted into recycled products, or used for energy, rather than turning into trash. This waste includes steel, wood, glass, plastic, rubber, paper, and other materials. In total, the Sumter plant recycled or converted 1.5 million pounds of waste into energy last year. Also of note, Continental’s Mt. Vernon plant in Mt. Vernon, Ill., was the first Continental Tire zero landfill plant in the world.
The Continental Sumter Plant works with waste management company HWI Environmental Technologies to properly process and repurpose all waste materials generated in the facility.
