API praises Senate action to enhance security of U.S. infrastructure

WASHINGTON, December 10, 2014 – The American Petroleum Institute welcomed the Senate’s approval today of the Protecting and Securing Chemical Facilities from Terrorist Attacks Act of 2014.

“America’s oil and natural gas industry holds safety and security as core values,” said API Executive Vice President Louis Finkel. “Taking steps to better protect critical infrastructure strengthens our economy and our national security. We encourage the House of Representatives to quickly take up and pass the bipartisan agreement approved by the Senate.”

The legislation has the strong support of American manufacturers, producers, processors, distributors, transporters, and retailers in agriculture, chemistry, energy, and other businesses that form our nation’s infrastructure. API and 19 other trade associations urged support for the bill in a letter sent to Congress earlier this month.

API thanked Senator Tom Carper and Senator Tom Coburn for their work to pass this bipartisan legislation through the Senate.

API represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 625 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation’s energy. The industry also supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and 8 percent of the U.S. economy.
