ABA, Center for Migration Studies Will Hold Conversation About ABA’s New Civil Immigration Detention Standards

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 5, 2012 — The American Bar Association and the Center for Migration Studies will host a dialogue on the ABA’s new Civil Immigration Detention Standards from 3:15 – 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Sullivan Worcester LLP in New York City. The standards address daily living conditions, access to legal and religious services, communications, visitation, grievances, accountability and oversight, and other areas.

Speakers include Dora Schriro, commissioner, New York City Department of Correction; Donald Kerwin, executive director of the Center for Migration Studies; and Karen Grisez, special counsel for Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver Jacobson LLP and moderator of the discussion. ABA President-Elect James Silkenat will give the closing remarks.

The standards were developed under the guidance of an advisory task force that included a former commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Schriro and experts from corrections, medical, academic and other fields. They were drafted with the pro bono assistance of Crowell Moring LLP.
