Campuses Use Automated Notifications to Keep Students and Faculty Up to Date

In this age of instant communication, campuses are looking for new ways to quickly and accurately inform students of important information. Many universities and school districts around the country are using automated messaging systems to alert students and parents of announcements, news and emergencies.
Automated messaging solutions like the PhoneTree VoiceWave system allows school administrators to spread alerts and notifications through phone, text or email with just a few clicks. These announcements can range from bus route notifications to PTA meeting announcements or school cancellation notices.
As Tropical Storm Isaac moved through the Gulf of Mexico, school administrators in Pasco County, Fla., used the county's automated phone system to contact parents and employees regarding school operations and closures due to the storm.
Campus alerts are also used in far more serious situations. When a gunman opened fire on the campus of Texas A&M College Station on Aug. 13, the university's Code Maroon alert system sent text message and email alerts to students and faculty both on and off campus.
Following an Aug. 14 bomb threat at its Shands Hospital, the University of Florida alerted students of the threat through text messages and later gave students an all clear, letting campus know that danger had passed and suspects were in custody.
Though automated messaging systems can play an important role in enhancing campus security, they also help streamline some of the more mundane issues for campuses of any size. Rather than using complicated phone trees, automated solutions allow campus leaders to release targeted, relevant whenever it is appropriate.
