The Harley Medical Group Urges Sporting Spectators Not To Forget The Sunscreen

08/14/2012 (press release: OnlinePR) // Imogen Holmes or Natasha Bradley

As the capital gets into full swing this summer, The Harley Medical Group are urging spectators attending sporting events across the UK to stay safe in the sun and remember to pack a high factor sunscreen if participants want to avoid the skin ageing effects of the sun.

Following research on over 3,000 patients, The Harley Medical Group’s skin expert Bernadette Harte reveals the average Brit’s skin is 12 years older than their actual age, due to the harmful effects of sun damage and lifestyle. The Harley Medical Group’s Visia Skin Imaging machine exposes the skin to UV light, creating a map of the face and revealing damaged areas such as skin pigmentation, enlarged pores, skin tone and the overall texture of the skin.

Many sporting events involve sitting outside during the period between 11-3pm when the sun is at its strongest so spectators should be aware of the need to increase protection to avoid sun damage. Harmful UVA rays can damage the skin’s dermis layer - the elastic tissue that keeps skin stretchy - producing a premature ageing and wrinkle increasing effect. Along with the ageing effects, there is also an increased risk of skin cancer with heightened sun exposure.

Bernadette Harte, Non-Surgical Specialist at The Harley Medical Group, said: “Many people who visit us have no idea how damaged their skin is. A common misconception is the more lined and wrinkled the skin the worse the quality; but this isn’t always the case. Skin damage is often not visible to the naked eye.”

“In Britain, people can assume that a cloudy sky means the sun won’t damage their skin but this is very misleading - you do still need to wear sun protection - we would recommend an SPF of 25 every day. We also suggest people consult the Solar UV Index in the Met Office weather forecasts to find out about the sun strength on the day of a particular sporting event during the Olympics.”

The Harley Medical Group offers a range of Non-Surgical treatments, such as a non surgical face lift, which help to treat sun damage, and improve the appearance of skin. The Obagi Blue Peel removes the surface layers of aged and damaged skin, restoring clarity, and the Agera Skin Peel and Medical Microdermabrasion both work to reduce sun damage as well as other skin conditions.

The Group also offers a treatment programme, including their own brand daily Enhanced Performance SPF 25 moisturiser to help limit sun damage. In order to assess the damage caused to the deeper layers of the skin, each of their 31 clinics nationwide offer patients a complimentary Visia Skin Analysis consultation.
