American Lung Association Names Dr. Harry Perlstadt to National Board of Directors
Washington, D.C. (July 2, 2012) —
The American Lung Association has named longtime American Lung Association volunteer and Haslett, Mich., resident Harry Perlstadt, Ph.D., MPH, to its National Board of Directors. In this role, he will help lead the Lung Association’s work to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
“Harry Perlstadt is an accomplished and respected public health advocate who has been integral to our fight for air for many years,” said Ross P. Lanzafame, Chair of the Board of the American Lung Association. “We look forward to his continued contributions as a member of our National Board of Directors as we strive to improve lung health and prevent lung disease.”
Dr. Perlstadt is a medical sociologist and professor emeritus at Michigan State University who specializes in medical sociology, health organizations and delivery systems, and evaluation research. He has been an active volunteer with the American Lung Association for nearly 30 years, serving on numerous boards and committees both locally and nationally—including its Nationwide Assembly and its National Research Scientific Advisory Committee.
As a representative of the American Lung Association, Dr. Perlstadt was the first chair of the Michigan Coalition on Smoking OR Health, which successfully advocated for the passage of Michigan’s first clean indoor air act. In addition, his leadership was vital to the formation of the American Lung Association of the Midland States, which serves Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Dr. Perlstadt has been honored with various awards in acknowledgement of his public service, including recognition from the American Lung Association and the State Senate of Michigan.
In addition to his work with the American Lung Association, Dr. Perlstadt has been chair of the American Public Health Association's Science Board, co-chair of its Joint Policy Committee and was an ex-officio member of its Executive Board. He was a Fulbright lecturer on U.S. healthcare policy and politics at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary in 2012, and he is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
