Los Angeles – Two men are accusing the hit reality show “The Bachelor” and “its sister program “The Bachelorette” of racial discrimination. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson allege in the federal lawsuit filed last week, that the shows purposely overlook people of color in casting decisions, barring them from starring roles.
The two men state that they were not given the same type of consideration as white male contestants during a casting call in August for a leading role on “The Bachelor.” Claybrooks is quoted by the AP as stating of the experience, “I only wanted a fair shot at the part…Looking back at how I was treated at the casting call last year, it was clear that that wasn’t possible. I never even had a chance.”
“The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” have purportedly never featured a person of color in starring roles in the 10 years and 23 seasons that it has been on air.
Warner Horizon Television is quoted as releasing the statement regarding the accusations made in the lawsuit, “We have had various participants of color throughout the series’ history, and the producers have been consistently — and publicly — vocal about seeking diverse candidates for both programs. As always, we continue to seek out participants of color for both ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette.”
The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.
