NANASP Statement On FDA Approved Vaccines To Prevent RSV In Older Adults
WASHINGTON, DC, USA, June 1, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ -- Today, following the approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a second vaccine to prevent the spread of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for adults aged 65 and older, the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs (NANASP1) issued the following statement from Executive Director
Robert Blancato:
“For more than six decades scientists have been working to develop a vaccine to combat RSV—and now, following one of the worst seasons we have seen for respiratory illnesses, we finally have tools to protect older Americans from the very serious outcomes associated with this potentially deadly virus. We applaud the dedicated work of scientists and clinical trial participants who have helped us to achieve
this incredible milestone.
Now, we need the team at CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)—specifically ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) to work to expedite their recommendation for these vaccines. ACIP’s recommendation followed by publication in the CDC’s MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) is what triggers vaccines to be available from healthcare providers and to be covered be insurers. Failure to act quickly could be devastating for some older Americans without access to vaccines as we head into another respiratory virus season. “
