Africa: Republic of Chad National Day
Press Statement
Secretary of State
On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Chad as you celebrate 51 years of independence this August 11.
The partnership between our two countries is rooted in our commitment to helping those in need. Since 2003, Chad has welcomed hundreds of thousands of refugees at a difficult time in its own history. Today, we celebrate your hospitality but continue to work toward a day when these refugees can peacefully and voluntarily return to their homes.
The United States is committed to helping Chad strengthen democratic systems, enforce rule of law, bolster regional stability and security and stand up against terrorists and extremists. Together we can help Chadians tap into their potential and realize a brighter future.
As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, know that the United States is a partner and friend. I wish all Chadians a safe and joyous National Day celebration and look forward to continued peace and prosperity for all of our people.
