Recovering While Being Deaf in a Time of Ebola - Three Weeks Remaining

BO, SOUTHERN PROVINCE, SIERRA LEONE, August 17, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Ebert Kakua School on the outskirts of Sierra Leone's second largest city is the only government-certified school for the deaf outside Freetown. In a country wracked with poverty (and recently rocked by the Ebola outbreak), the disabled were particularly hard hit. But while schools were closed due to the outbreak, the Ebert Kakua school leadership were not idle. Using their own funds as well as grants from German and Spanish NGOs, the staff has expanded the campus to include a dormitory and community hall.

“Attendance, learning and health improves for the deaf students by living at the school,” explains Derek Reinhard, the Indiegogo project¹ sponsor and Executive Director of Deeper Missions², “Students are guaranteed regular meals in a safe, caring and academically empowering environment.” With schools reopening in Sierra Leone, the Ebert Kakua school needs to furnish its dorm and classrooms for returning students, especially the first-ever resident students. Mr. Reinhard continues, “I've been supporting and visiting the school for over 6 years now and I am constantly amazed by the work being done and the lives transformed even in the most trying economic environments.”

This campaign helps keep the school on an exciting trajectory of growth and success for the students by filling the dorm with needed furniture, feeding the students and hiring caring "aunties" for the next school year and expanding the school's solar energy into lighting for the dormitory.
