The Hope Project: Rebuilding a relationship between Liberia and The United States
Liberia is the fourth poorest country in the world and has an unemployment rate of almost 80 percent. In 1820 Liberia was founded as a colony for freed African slaves from The United States. Since then there has been unrest between indigenous Liberians and “Americo-Liberians.” After nearly two decades of civil war that destroyed Liberia's infrastructure and education system, the country is slowly rebuilding.
The goal of The Hope Project is to help end the cycle of poverty in Liberia by providing a tuition-free, Pre-K through 12th grade school where children who otherwise couldn't afford an education can go to school, graduate with a high school diploma, and go beyond to get a job, support their family and contribute to the regrowth of their country. In this way The Hope Project School is providing a future of dignity and hope for the 1,200 children and families in Liberia and investing in the future leaders of Africa.
The Nash and Frazier families, who adopted children from Liberia, founded the Hope Project in 2007. During their adoptions they developed a friendship with native Liberian Joseph Cummings. The families asked Joseph what they could do to help him and his community, and he answered, “We need a school. These children are the future of Liberia, and without education they can do nothing for us.” With the cooperation of their communities in Seattle and Leavenworth the Nash’s and Frazier’s have since been providing the means to pay teachers, upkeep the school, buy curriculum, and provide clean water and basic medical care for the school on a monthly basis. The monthly operations for The Hope Project is $12,000.
The Hope Project is supported completely by individual donors who share the dream of providing education to the children in the world and thus ending poverty and investing in the future leaders of the world. We hope that anyone who is interested in this cause attends the Hope Celebration to learn more.
The Executive Director, Michael Nash, and Board President, David Frazier, are available for interviews about The Hope Project.
