If you are a trucking company and you’re not ahead of the technology curve, you are going to struggle.
PHOENIX, AZ, UNITED STATES, June 19, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Andy Ahern, Founder and CEO of Ahern & Associates, Ltd., the premier transportation consulting company and M&A transportation advisory firm, has released the latest edition of the Ahern Advisory, a top weekly newsletter for the trucking and transportation industry. Within the newsletter, Mr. Ahern reveals his thoughts along with some facts regarding the current state of the industry, as well as recent developments concerning it.— Andy Ahern, Founder and CEO
“The trucking industry has certainly gone through some huge economic challenges over the past several years,” he states. “Technology is on the rise, and I have continually stated that trucking needs to embrace technology and be prepared for substantial growth in technology over the next 5 years. If you are a trucking company and you’re not ahead of the technology curve, you are going to struggle,” he advises.
A recent interview that featured Andy Ahern showcased the advancement of automated trucks and transportation garnered much attention; as part of this latest issue of the Ahern Advisory, Ahern further discusses the idea of trucks that can operate without human drivers in the seat and says, “There has been much said about trucks that drive themselves, but that is way off in the future; well, it’s not as far off as you think. If you have been reading Transport Topics, TIA News or the Commercial Carrier Journal, you’ll know that many of the big manufacturers are investing billions in technology on self-driving trucks.” The discussion regarding automation in the industry continues with the backlog in the ports in L.A.
Further discussion continues with platooning; namely, allowing two or more tractors or trailers to link together on the interstates, even if they are separate trucking companies. By allowing this connectivity and new technology, accidents will be able to more often be avoided, and fuel economy can be improved.
Mr. Ahern also discusses the FMCSA and inspections; nearly ten thousand inspectors will perform nearly 70,000 inspections on trucks and buses over a 72-hour period this week. They look for brakes, lighting, tires, wheels, suspension and steering, and the like. Overall, the trucking industry is doing well in improving technology, equipment, and improving processes. Mr. Ahern explains in the issue of the Ahern Advisory, “When you are a truck driver, you have to know how to manage fuel, control cost, do routing, and whether you are a company driver or an independent contractor, you are a business person.” However, there are minimal to no guidelines for the general public when driving passenger vehicles. He goes on to discuss regulating the trucking industry vs. the lack of regulating passenger vehicle drivers.
Mr. Ahern also touches on the current slide of the economy, and reveals information brought forth by reports by the Wall Street Journal regarding the coal industry, leading up the a discussion on the FMCSA and the mandates it imposes on the industry.
