IBERDROLA REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
In 2014, Iberdrola once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and the generation of energy using the cleanest and most competitive sources on the market. This unwavering commitment to the most environmentally-friendly technologies means that at the end of 2014, 91% of its output in Spain was emissions-free. This figure stood at 57% for its facilities worldwide.
The company reduced its CO2 emissions worldwide by 6% last year, dropping from the figure of 226 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour (kWh) recorded in 2013 to 212 grams of CO2 per kWh in 2014. In Spain, the group recorded 58 grams of CO2 per kWh between January and December of 2014, compared to 66 grams of CO2 per kWh in the previous year, which means that emissions dropped by 13%.
To be more specific, the company produced 78,929 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy from emissions-free sources. In Spain, the amount was 55,381 gigawatt hours.
Iberdrola also ended this period with 62% of its total installed capacity emissions-free, or 27,931 megawatts (MW). In the case of Spain, this percentage rose to 72% (18,326 MW).
The company has received recognition for its long-standing commitment to using the most environmentally-friendly generation sources. It has set itself a specific target for reducing emissions and is committed to being 20% below the values recommended by the International Energy Agency for the European electricity sector in 2020.
The group has one of the most sustainable and balanced power generation pools in the world, with 14,652 MW from renewable sources, 9,869 MW from hydraulic facilities, 3,410 MW from nuclear power plants, 12,742 MW from combined cycle gas plants and 1,238 MW from cogeneration plants.
The world is in the middle of a transition towards a sustainable energy model, which must necessarily be built with three fundamental aspects in mind: competitiveness, security of supply and respect for the environment.
For a company like Iberdrola, the environmental dimension is the cornerstone of the concept of sustainability. The company acknowledges its importance by including respect for the environment in the concepts that define the company.
Most sustainable utility
Iberdrola has been acknowledged as the most sustainable utility in Spain and the third most sustainable worldwide, according to the ranking drawn up by North American magazine Newsweek in collaboration with the Corporate Knights Capital organisation.
The company is also listed as one of the top three companies in Spain as regards sustainable development. It has been commended for its environmental strategy, which focuses on promoting the most environmentally-friendly technologies to reduce emissions, boosting efficiency in how resources are used and reporting on its actions.
This acknowledgement follows the group's inclusion in other indices and awards, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, FTSE 4Good, the Sustainability Yearbook 2013, the European Business Awards 2012-2013 and the Two Tomorrows ranking.
Among other initiatives, Iberdrola's efforts to head these lists has led to the approval of various environmental policies, such as the following: Climate Change Policy, Environmental Policy and the Biodiversity Policy. In December 2013, the company approved a new Sustainability Policy to promote its activities in the area of sustainable development. All of these rules were approved by the Board of Directors of the company. They set out the principles according to which the company will go on working to enhance its environmental management.
