Press Release - U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces $3.9 Million Grant for Copiah County Airport in Crystal Springs, Miss.
WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $3.9 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to construct a new runway at the Copiah County Airport in Crystal Springs, Miss.
"This funding will help improve Copiah County Airport's infrastructure and will keep aircraft moving safely and efficiently throughout Mississippi," said Secretary LaHood."Making important investments in our aviation system promotes safety and economic growth in communities across the country."
The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant will fund a new 4,000-foot-long runway, which will include standard runway safety areas. The new, longer runway will better accommodate the aircraft currently using the airport. The existing 3,000-foot-long runway will be used as a taxiway when the new runway is completed. Construction will begin in October 2012 and will take approximately eight months to complete.
"This grant enhances the operation of the airport which allows continued quality service to its passengers," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.
AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for airport improvement projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
