Salmonella Scare Prompts Massive Recall
Salmonella Scare Prompts Massive Recall
March 5, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The FDA has ordered a massive recall of food products containing the flavoring hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) over fears of salmonella contamination.
The FDA said the recall centered on HVP from Basic Food Flavors Inc. that has been distributed since last September. HVP is used in a huge array of foods including hot dogs, potato chips and other snack foods, soups, salad dressings, sauces, chilis, stews, gravies, and dips.
Foods already recalled carry the brand names Castella, Follow Your Heart, Great Value, Johnny's Fine Foods and Trader Joe's. However, it's not possible to tell from a product's label whether a food contains HVP. The FDA said it will be updating on its website a database of recalled brands and foods as the administration becomes aware of items that may be contaminated.
The FDA associate commissioner for food protection, Jeffrey Farrar, said "We don't know how large this is going to get. This will get larger over the next several days and weeks. ... The recall process may continue for some time."
