Up And Away (By Genevieve Hawkins) Wall Street scored several days of much needed gains last week, and now that investors have realized that the market could go up again, there may be an extended rally. For the five days ended last Friday the Dow shot up 9%, while the S&P 500 rose 10.7% and the Nasdaq rallied 10.6% as bargain hunters returned for deeply discounted stock values. Although a few more days of gains could have pundits calling a market bottom, there is still the potential for bad news to ruin the mood quickly. For the coming week, investors will be eying data on inflation, housing starts and industrial utilization. Any proposals drafted by the Federal Open Market Committee to counter the financial crisis may also be scrutinized by market watchers, some of whom are hopeful that the return of the uptick rule will prevent egregious short selling. The Federal Reserve is also expected to make a decision in regard to interest rates, but with the funds rate effectively at zero a cut isn't possible. A rally in bank stocks could occur if regulators decide to change the mark to market accounting rules currently in place, which could pull up the market as a whole. The rally could easily be sustained this week, but there is too much uncertainty left to call a true bottom.
