Mike File, a retired teacher, and owner of the House of File Technology Lounge has written a detailed “How-to” to help people everywhere maintain their security in cyberspace. This detailed document walks computer users step-by-step through good security practices, how to set up secure passwords (and keep them safe), how to keep from downloading bad programs and what to do if you make a mistake and do get a virus. He has made this document available to anyone who wishes to download it because he believes that people who use computers and the Internet should have available information about how to keep trespassers and cyber crime out of their computer.
The document covers steps that you need to take to keep your personal and banking information secure and free from potential leaks.
He also has a detailed section on maintaining a positive personal profile online – including how to ask people to remove compromising photographs of you from their websites. He reminds, for example, that they don’t actually have to remove the moderately embarrassing ones, but that outright pornography can be reported to the authorities.
Mr. File also addresses teaching your children how to be safe when on the Internet. As a retired teacher, he understands exactly how vulnerable youngsters can be when accessing the World Wide Web freely.
Finally, he explains how to create your own virtual network and how to use it to make your information more secure.
All of this great information is there, free, for anyone to download and use. If you are new to computers, or at least new to getting “under the hood” and dealing with the inside mechanics of your computer, then you might want to actually print out this guide. It has excellent step by step directions, but you might want to highlight some parts of it, and perhaps even have a 3 X 5 notecard to mark your place and you as you read through it or as you apply the information.

He has started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to help turn his Six-point check-up program into an application that can be used launched from either Windows or Apple based computers and mobile devices. He understands that not eveyone has time to read through a complex document – particularly when only a portion of it is needed.
He would also like to advertise the existence of this useful document, so that people in other areas will know that it is available. He completely understands that even the best information in the world won’t help people if they have no idea how to locate it.
For a modest $20 donation, contributors will receive a newsletter that will keep them up-to-date on cyber security and new technological developments for the application. He asks only that you let others know about the information, and that you encourage them to visit the website, and view the information. Word-of-mouth, even when sent through social media, is still a very useful form of advertising.
Although the document is 46 pages long, it is well worth spending the time to read it. Just imagine having a software application that can lead users through it step by step or that can check your Internet access security.
