Study: Millions of People May be Infected with Herpes by Their Sex Partners; The CBCD Comments on the Study

Without knowing it, over 400 million people may transmit HSV-2 to their partners. (1)

It’s not that you take an antiviral supplement to prevent herpes; it’s that you take them to reduce the numbers of latent HSV in your body.

“Infected with the herpes virus (HSV-1, or HSV-2)? The CBCD recommends taking Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD

According to a new study, up to 400 million people may transmit the genital herpes virus (HSV-2) to their sex partners. Dr. Looker and colleagues wrote that “the global burden of HSV-2 infection has not been evaluated since 2003. Estimates were published in 2008, when we estimated for the first time that 536 million people had existing (prevalent) and 23.6 million people had new (incident) HSV-2 infection world-wide.” (1) Dr. Looker is from the University of Bristol in Bristol, England. The study authors continued, writing that currently, “approximately 417 million people world-wide have HSV-2 infection … it is potentially fatal when transmitted to neonates, and causes distressing symptoms in a substantial number of adolescents and adults.” (1) In other words, the herpes infection rate has remained relatively constant, which suggests that there have been no significant improvements in prevention or treatment strategies.

This is important. According to Time.com, “75% to 90% of people who test positive for HSV-2 have never been officially diagnosed with genital herpes; most infected people don’t even know they carry the virus.” (See Time.com, from April 12, 2011) (2) With the numbers of HSV infected individuals in the millions, uninfected individuals may have sex with an infected person and not know it. “People with genital herpes can still infect their sex partners - even if they are taking anti-herpes drugs that prevent herpes outbreaks. Even when they don't have an active herpes outbreak, people who carry genital herpes viruses are at risk of infecting their sex partners. With the discovery of drugs that prevent herpes outbreaks, there was hope that the drugs would also prevent herpes transmission. But there's been troubling evidence that this may not be true.” (See WebMD, from January 5, 2012) (3)

In light of the study’s findings, the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that HSV infected individuals take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR. “It’s possible that you are infected and you never know. It’s not that you take an antiviral supplement to prevent herpes; it’s that you take them to reduce the numbers of latent HSV in your body. Wouldn’t you do that if you could?” – Greg Bennett, CBCD. Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR do not prevent genital herpes. However, they were designed to help the immune system target the latent virus, and were shown to be effective in reducing herpes symptoms in two separate post-marketing clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines.

The formula of Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD. The studies showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin formula is effective against the family of herpes viruses, including HSV-1 and HSV-2. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with (HSV-1 or HSV-2)…reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (4) The study authors also wrote that, “We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (4)

Both products can be ordered online on the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR websites.

Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses. To date, Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims.

Dr. Looker also wrote that “precision regarding the burden of infection is critical information for … development of … new treatments and diagnostics. … in addition, precise estimates by region are crucial for guiding broader STI prevention and control efforts.” (1) In other words, it is critically important to understand just how many people are actually infected with the herpes virus. By understanding this number, scientists and medical professionals can make an educated guess as to how many more people are at risk of becoming infected. They can then work to prevent infection from happening, and they can develop new, more effective treatments for those who are already infected.

What treatments are currently available for herpes infections?

“Two types of antiviral treatments against HSV are available: topical and oral. The treatments include penciclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day.” (4). There are also the natural supplements Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR, which have a formula that was designed to help the immune system target the herpes virus when it is in a latent form.

“We recommend that individuals who are already infected with the genital herpes virus (HSV-2 or HSV-1) take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR. The formula of these natural herpes remedies was found to be effective in reducing herpes symptoms in two separate clinical studies.” – Greg Bennett, CBCD
